Ellen Colcord

In 1988 I made a U-turn and left my design firm in New York City to follow a fine artist’s path and become a Painter. The Painter’s path brought me to Italy to study icons from the Sienese school. Spending endless hours in the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo in Siena, Italy I was tutored by the great 13th century master Duccio di Buoninsegna and became engulfed in his golden sphere. Thus became my quest for the spiritual in art making. I continued my studies at the Yale University Divinity Master’s program in Art and Religion, Academia di Belle Arte in Urbino Italy and completed a Master’s in Studio Art at New York University.

Forward to 2020, living and working in Greenwich Village, NYC my focus and muse continues to be the Spiritual in Art. My painting life has turned to multi-media making, collage, films, books, sculpture and mixed medium artworks. I have exhibited internationally and in the United States. I teach painting and mixed media and have had the privilege of teaching disadvantaged children in Central America and Covenant House in New York City. I have curated a number of exhibitions including “Girls” for 60 homeless and abused girls living in a shelter in Guatemala. Currently I am the coordinator for Visionary Studio Art, a social justice and art program at New York University.
